What do I mean by Ethical Business?

Well it sounds obvious but in reality there is a big disconnect between common sense, and what occurs.

For me based on what I’ve seen over the last few decades, it’s clear that Ethical must include looking after the best interests of your customers and clients for the long run. It also includes looking after the well being of the wider community that the business operates inside of.

When every business owner, employee, and supplier realises that there is a holistic business world in which we all operate inside of, then there is a new opportunity to work more strategically and transparently.

If you have ever had to wait in for an engineer that has never arrived, or if you’ve ever heard an excuse from a supplier that really doesn’t take ownership for what has happened, then you’ve experienced the contrast.

There is an old phrase “Treat others as you would be treated”.

I look forward to the day when we all do this and it becomes our natural state and thoughts.

I was becoming increasingly aware of the importance to our business of developing a ‘joined-up’ internet marketing strategy to develop more leads through social networking sites such as Twitter, Facebook and Linked-In when I met Simon Hedley.

I attended Simon’s workshop with an open mind, not quite clear what I would achieve – and my expectations were exceeded by a long way…

Simon clearly is a master in this field – highly knowledgeable, articulate, passionate and business savvy at the same time. His has the ability to cut through the jargon, without patronising and helped all of the attendees (including me) develop an internet strategy to create leads into the business in a fun-packed, interactive way.

More than that, he demonstrated that SEO is just one small element of an all-encompassing strategy.

I left at the end of the workshop feeling confident and empowered having created a twitter account, a blog account and understanding how these fitted into my overall business strategy.

I am confident that this new found knowledge and skill will payback many times over, now and in the future in generating new leads and new business.

Now, what I liked about their email is they have responded to market feedback and from a position of strength, it also makes sense. It is too easy to fall into the same pricing models used by every app or web business, but many of those models were developed at a different time, when market usage was different.

Since we launched a month ago we’ve had lots of feedback about the “per-device” pricing model. Based on the thoughtful feedback many of you provided we’ve decided to change the pricing model to something more in line with many of your expectations.

We’ve been working hard to get the new changes ready and are happy to announce that they’re being rolled out tomorrow (Friday 4th March).

What’s Changing?

• The “per-device” pricing model has been scrapped

• In its place is a tiered pricing model that allows for a certain number of simultaneous connections per account for sharing amongst colleagues, clients and investors

• For those who want to share their dashboards with the world, all accounts will allow unlimited simultaneous connections using ad-supported dashboards

• New free plan

• 30-day credit card free trial on all paid plans

What happens to my account?

Your account will be automatically migrated to one of the new plans. If you’ve already entered your credit card information you will be migrated to an account that costs the same or less than what you signed up for. In all cases your account will offer more functionality than it did prior to the changes at no extra cost.

Basic & Turbo accounts will be migrated to the new ‘S’ plan (10 simultaneous connections and a 3 minute custom widget refresh rate).

Rocket accounts will be migrated to the new ‘M’ plan (20 simultaneous connections and a 30 second custom widget refresh rate).

If you ordered multiple devices on any plan you’ll see substantial savings in the new plans. In addition, users who signed up for the basic plan will see their custom widget refresh rate increase from 15 minutes to 3 minutes.

The event is an “unconference”, which brings together around 200 of the brightest and mist active players in government, community and new developments.

There have been many highlights today and I wish I was more able to share fully, all that has been discussed.

Some I can share:
- there is a huge amount in the planning.
- the willingness, openness, interest is there.
- wordpress 3 developments are bridging the gap with drupal
- culture change top down and bottom up has to occur
- information is not fully exchanged resulting in very disturbing inefficiencies
- organisational anonymity is potentially toxic
- There is a lower common understanding than the majority realise

I caught the trailer for a major TV show tonight, and realised that one of the stars is a friend who went travelling a few years ago. We met when I helped a mutual friend with preparations for London fashion week, and with photography which is one of my passions. It’s funny how small the world can be.

I’m also reminded again of the lesson that seems to come and get real, then often, get forgotten – Everything Happens for a Reason. It’s all too easy to get fixated on the expected results, and what we think will happen.

Today has seen – an email from a business partner on new start up opportunities in London (which is one of our passions), possible venture capital funding for several projects through extended networks, as well as the need to get robust teams in place to run the foundations of what many people are building.

Sometimes we’re ready to take these “omens” or “signs” and run with them, sometimes they just go by. Either way, the fact that our routes to where we are now are filled with chance encounters, twists and turns, is hard to escape. I published The Success Spiral earlier in the year, and so far the first few thousand people to review it have noticed a big impact (though subtle). I’m allowing myself this moment of lucid thought, as today is intended to be a “day off”, though as I’ve shared a few times, I don’t believe that “balance” actually exists in the conventional pie-chart hours on/hours off approach.

When you’re playing full out, and able to go with the flow, then you can take advantage of what comes up much more easily. The caveat being.. it’s important to know when to say NO.. and that’s something that many of us, don’t like to do..

WIth that said.. I’m going to go follow up on some earlier commitments and continue to see where this spiral rollercoaster takes us tomorrow..

- PS Parental and WORK Warning, the content is quite strong in terms of language.

I found a couple of the ideas quite on point, and hinted to prior dynamics – eg the UK Poor houses and Debtors Jails,
where people that couldn’t pay their bills were jailed, until they could pay their bills.
(and yes.. when in Jail, it was virtually impossible for them to work or earn money,
so they would at that point be stuck)

The good news is that Micro-Finance, and Joint Ventures are becomming more prevalent,
and the use of online digital tools and spaces to form cooperative groups, working
at almost 0 cost to produce real value is now “common” though not common in usage.

Either way, I found the idea of leaving Social Media to focus on what you choose,
and understanding that you don’t have to do anything online,
while remaining with a clear understanding that you, provides people with choice.

For myself, I will keep doing what I chose, what I want and what I feels helps most people
most of the time, and being part of the process of Optimisation that we do as Psi Pi Group.
